Can someone explain to me how car insurance works?
Cyndy Grimes: Im 18 btw and dont have my own car so thats why i use my moms
Clementina Collelo: While insurance IS for cars, the insurance bases your rates not only on the car, but on the risk they assume for the people driving the car. They take into account driving history, claim history, age, gender, etc. When a licensed person lives in the same household as the policy holder, the insurance requires notification, so they can reassess their risk. Their reasoning is that another person has access to the car, and their (the insurance company's) risk has now increased. There's more of a chance that they will have to pay out for a loss because another person COULD be driving the car, even if they never do.So, your mom is partially right. You shouldn't be driving the car until you're on the insurance. But she's wrong, in a sense, because she should have notified her insurance immediately after you got your license....Show more
