Convincing my parents for me to get jaw surgery? Â
answers 0:I'm 16 right now and i have a class 3 bite (underbite). I really want surgery when i'm older though but my parents are against it. They say "you look fine right now" "the surgery will scar your face and mess it up" "and you can die from surgery (even though the ortho said it is perfectly safe)" -_- I really want this surgery though! How do i convince them? Oh and also i heard that most insurance don't cover the surgery since it's considered "cosmetic surgery"... is this true? And i know that once I'm 18 I can make decisions for myself but i really want them to support me. What do i do?...Show moreanswers 1:During a dentist appointment when the x rays are out and start to comment about odd placement that might get you to the orthodontist and do same thing again that might get you to jaw surgery also there will be no noticable! scars exept deep isnide your mouthanswers 2:I'm sort of in the same boat, but here's some things you need to know about orthognathic surgery:1. Orthognathic surgery is covered under medical, not dental, insurance. It is covered if your bite is preventing you from being able to bite or chew your food properly (one of my main problems), it is causing TMJ dysfunction, speech problems or obstructive sleep apnea (one of my other problems).2. Orthognathic surgery is now done through the tissue of the mouth, and not under the chin, the way it used to be done. The only incisions made through the skin are under the jaw near the neck for the oral maxillofacial surgeon to place the screws for the plates to keep the jaws in place while the bones heal. These incisions are only about 2 mm, and when they heal, they're practically invisible.3. There is a risk of death with this surgery, but this is the same for ANY surgery. Make sure you check with your surgeon beforehand to see if ! he's ever had anyone die while they were in surgery, and why t! hey died, and also be sure to ask the same thing of your anesthesiologist.Your parents think you look fine because they're your parents and they're used to seeing you like this. Don't worry about it too much. When I told my mother that I was getting this surgery done, she accepted it after I told her about the physical problems I was having after initially being against it. Sometimes, they just need to know what's going on....
